Moral concerns are stopping condom distribution in Zambia's prisons

B
Bright spent two years in Zambia's Lusaka Central Prison for selling cannabis but fears he now faces a life sentence.

"I did it because of hunger," says Bright softly.

"There's not much food in prison. Sex has become the way of payment."

"Conditions were bad," he remembers. "We had nshima [maize meal] and beans two times a day. I never felt full."

One day, the cell "captain" gave Bright extra food, then asked him for sex.

"I
had never had sex with a man, but I did it. The first time it was
painful, but I joined a group of maybe 20 men who did that.

"Mainly they were people who were condemned, or who had been jailed for 25 years. They hadn't seen women for a long time."

Some international music icons have added their voices to press for the liberation of Lapiro de Mbanga after that of civil society organisations.

Music stars of different horizons and nationality have put together an album of eleven tracks dedicated to Lapiro de Mbanga of Cameroon incarcerated since March 2008 in Kondengui prison shortly after the February 2008 social unrest. The authorities, it should be recalled, accused the legendary musician of fanning the February 2008 uprising flames by instigating youths to go on the streets.

Facing National Challenges November 9, 2009

Richard Kwang Kometa

Another anniversary moment for the New Deal government of
President Paul Biya has arrived with November 6 manifestations marking
a transition to the second Republic in Cameroon in 1982.

As usual, stock-taking on the evolution of national life is in
vogue. Unique in this year's activities is the fact that a generation
of Cameroonians who are 27-years-old know only the New Deal era. Such
youths in the same way as Cameroon under Paul Biya, have long gone into
the age of maturity and can validly count their blessings, trials,
tribulations and make a reasonable projection into the future.

Talking to most Cameroonians aged 27 this year, their cry is that
they would want to have jobs and lead decent lives. That could rightly
be one of the major points of reflection that the many manifestations
across the country to commemorate this anniversary would be looking
into. President Paul Biya has himself stated that "democracy is indeed
a socio political regime in which the relations between men are
regulated as per the respect of their freedom and their equality; in
this way, it remains the only form of government which truly and
genuinely strives to base social order on the imperative of human
dignity". This vision of governance carries the seed of Mr Biya's
political stewardship in Cameroon over the years.

Railway Activities Return to Normal September 1, 2009

Movement
has begun effectively along the railway despite tragic incidents of
last weekend. nhabitants of Yaounde and its environs are yet to forget
the tragic incidents that occurred over the weekend: two train
accidents in two major entrances of the town and a fire disaster at the
extension of the Yaounde Central market popularly known as “Kosovo”. In
all 12 people died in the two train accidents and over 600 wounded. The
situation has left many people worried as many continue to doubt about
the future of the railway system in Cameroon. This notwithstanding,
life has gone back to normal and movement has begun effectively along
the railway. At the Yaounde train station in the Elig Essono
neighbourhood work is going on normally. When Cameroon Tribune
reporters visited the railway station yesterday they found that the
area was exceptionally busy. This was quite normal as it was the
arrival of the train from the northern part of the country, precisely
Ngaoundéré. People were seen carrying their luggage on their heads,
others with children, coming out of the train and looking tired.

Two horrific train accidents occurred in Yaounde over the weekend, leaving ten people dead and hundreds wounded.

The
first of the accidents took place at Obogobo neighbourhood after a
train carrying patrol with 15 wagons derailed, causing four of the fuel
carrying wagons belonging to Societé Camerounais de Depot Petrolier,
SCDP, to explode, sparking a conflagration.

The considerable
amount of patrol that spilled from the wrecked tankers and the huge
fire that ensued did not spare the neighbouring houses around the scene
